So, I debated what theme to have for Van's first birthday, debated and debated. I actually stewed over it so much that at one point I was thinking I wouldn't even have a party. I didn't want anything that had already been done or anything too "kitschy" like "Isn't he lovely? Isn't he One-derful".. nope. I wanted something funny, memorable, and most importantly, something that would be fun in pictures.
I finally decided to run with his first word (and favorite food at the time), Banana. From there, I was having a Banana party. Again, I stewed because it just wasn't enough. From there, I decided to add in my favorite thing ever.. DISCO. And there you have it my friends, was my son's 1st birthday theme, and it was adorable: * BANANA DISCO *

The only things I did splurge on were the custom cakes. Looking back, I should have just done one tiny "smash" cake for Van and then mini cupcakes for everyone else because there was so much leftover. Van was allergic to eggs until he was 2, so I needed his small smash cake to be egg-free. That's why I went custom for his cake. They were picture perfect and absolutely adorable, but one thing I should have told the baker was to not put black icing on Van's smash cake.. huge mistake. His mouth was black and it wouldn't come off LOL. I got 8 bunches of bananas from Trader Joe's and put them on the tables and around the house, cheap and easy, and those were my party favors for the moms (haha!).
For the adult drinks, I kept it simple: Veuve and Ranch Waters. One giant bottle of Clase Azul, mini Topo's and limes, and then Veuve, of course. I did super affordable catering trays from Central Market (all pick up foods) and for the kids I had bananas, banana pouches and whatever was in my fridge (rice, apple sauce, whatever). Let's be real, the 1st birthday party is for you just as much as it is for them. Get the good stuff!
The best idea I had was to put out the giant play pen. The toddlers were trapped and played while we sipped and laughed. It was a perfect afternoon and very, very memorable.
